Christopher Plantin was indubitably the greatest printer of his time and ranks in the history of printing among the few giant figures who have stamped the craft with the mark of their genius.

This is the first full-scale study of one of the most important figures in the history of printing, the man who in the sixteenth century "turned what has been a handicraft into an industry".

From Plantin`s presses there flowed books on an immense range of subjects and the variety of his output was dazzling.

It included compact editions of the classics as well as the most brilliant contemporary works on Botany, theology and history; Grammars and dictionaries in Flemish, German, Greek and Hebrew; Bibles, liturgies and masses.

All his publications were magnificent examples of the typographer`s skills. There is no printer who can have left a finer memorial to his art than Plantin did with the famous Polyglot Bible, its parallel texts in Aramaic, Hebrew, Greek and Latin.

He laid the foundations for the great business of publishing and showed that books could be well made even when produced in quantity. His work is preserved in the Plantin Moretus Museum in Antwerp.

Christopher Plantin
FitzGibbon`s The Life of Dylan Thomas holds its place as the best and most direct biography of the poet. It aims, with truthfulness and integrity, to portray the whole complex man: at once lovable and maddening, high-spirited and sad, but always indisputably a genius.

The tragic, destructive elements in Thomas` character are made abundantly clear, the author having managed to relegate his subjective feelings to the background, leaving the stage clear for well-documented or well-attested facts.

A rich impression builds up of Thomas` odd encounters during the wartime and post-war years, in the pubs and clubs of London and New York.

There are his meetings with friends and enemies, with the famous men and women of his day, and there are those evenings that he spent in passionate conversation and debate with other poets, with whom he always felt most at ease.

The central thread of thirty-nine fiercely lived years runs exultantly through this book.

The Life of Dylan Thomas
This book is a definition of the process by which Ernest Hemingway transposed a conventional talent into an artistic skill.

It is based on the premise that his extraordinary position - "Hemingway is the bronze god of the whole contemporary literacy experience in America" said Alfred Kazin in 1942 - warrants close investigation of a period that lasted no more than half a dozen years.

The years of Hemingway`s late adolescence and early manhood, between 1916 and 1924, were the years when he acquired not only his basic attitudes as a man and an artist, but in many instances the material of his early fiction.

This book throws a clear light on that formative period, dealing with Hemingway`s formal education, cub reporting and combat in the First World War. The picture it gives of a major writer in the making is deeply revealing.

The Apprenticeship of Ernest Hemingway
With his first major work appearing on the eve of the First World War and his last on the eve of the Second, James Joyce has seemed a symptom and portent of our age.

At the same time he has challenged and delighted readers, scholars, critics, and artists with his verbal magic and unique vision.

If the discovery of Joyce has at times been a grim work in progress, it is also a fascinating search, a second Quest for Corvo, as the Dublin Joycean, Niall Sheridan, has suggested.

Here, published for the first time in one volume, is a full-length portrait of James Joyce, the man and his achievement.

A truly wide-ranging survey of the field of Joycean criticism, it also includes many fascinating details about his life - his rift with the Church, his alienation from Ireland, his stormy friendships - together with important previously unpublished letters.

The authors offer incisive guidance to Joyce`s major writings through a systematic interpretation of each work which clarifies the more obscure passages.

It is essential reading for anyone interested in Joyce as a man, as an artist and as a major figure of twentieth-century culture.

Joyce - The Man, The Work, The Reputation
Quod ore sumpsimus

Eric Gill`s Autobiography was published in December 1940, one month after his death at the age of fifty-eight. The book soon became a best-seller and was reprinted eleven times during the five years of World War II.

Gill proved to be one of Britain`s most versatile artists during the first half of this century.

He left his mark both within England and abroad in the fields of sculpture, wood-engraving, typography and design and his typefaces, such as Perpetua and Gill-Sans serif, are still widely used today.

Although his Autobiography has for many years been the main source of information regarding his life and work, several biographies have, during the last decades, shed an interesting light on the life of this extraordinary artist and craftsman.

Robert Speaight`s "Life of Eric Gill" appeared in 1966, to be followed by Donal Attwater`s "A Cell of Good Living", three years later.

However, interest in the life and work of Eric Gill has not waned and his Autobiography remains a most important record of the life and work of an artist whose influence is still visible today.

As Eric Gill wrote to his publisher Jonathan Cape in 1933: "I very much doubt whether you would dare to publish what I should dare to write for I do not see how my kind of life, which is not that of a big game hunter, could be written without intimate details."
