Paris between the two world wars provided the setting for as fabulous a group of artists, poets and writers, of geniuses and charlatans, as ever lived in the same city at the same time. For dozens of Americans and others, these were the years of `exile`.

Today many of their names are very much a part of our literary and artistic heritage, so what was it that made them exiles; what were the goals they sought; what sort of people were they and what kind of times produced them?

Here is their story, written by an observant and witty member of the group who returned home to America in 1933 after a decade in Europe, seven years of which were spent in Paris.

It gives the picture, too, of what happened after exile, what made those who did return return and what they brought with them.

Among the exiles who walk these pages are Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, Elliot Paul and John Dos Passos.

Paris Was Our Mistress
Sylvia Beach made literary history in 1922 when she published the first edition of James Joyce`s Ulysses under the imprint of her Paris bookshop, Shakespeare and Company.

But it was not only Joyce who visited her bookshop on the Left Bank, but also most of the writers who were to make the 1920`s legendary when they converged on Paris to live and work.

All were customers and callers at Shakespeare and Company, No. 12 Rue de l`Odéon, which became the buzzing social centre for one of this century`s most significant literary movements.

Sylvia Beach brings her friends and customers to life in vivid portraits.

Here are Ernest Hemingway, Ezra Pound, George Antheil, Gertrude Stein, Sherwood Anderson, Scott Fitzgerald as well as some of the leading French writers who were also her patrons: Paul Valéry, André Gide and Jules Romains among many others.

The author of this enchanting book was uniquely placed to witness and record an important chapter in a literary era.

Shakespeare and Company
Aubrey Beardsley is one of the few men whose name has come to represent a whole period of art and letters.

His art epitomises the fin de siècle, its fascination with the curious, the grotesque, the perverse and the exquisitely wrought.

Beardsley`s letters, like those of many of his contemporaries, were usually written in haste and without thought for literary posterity.

Nevertheless they form an important testimony to the power of his imagination and the mastery of composition and line that coalesced so strikingly in all his mature work.

The popularity of Beardsley`s art continues unabated. This collection of all his surviving known letters, written between 1878, when he was only six, and 1898, the year of his early death, represents a monumental record of the life of one of the most remarkable artistic careers.

The Letters of Aubrey Beardsley
For tutors of creative writing, their students and all aspiring writers, this is an indispensable work.

It distils the knowledge and experience gained from a long, illustrious teaching career, and offers a deep and practical insight into the creative process as well as a shrewd analysis of the techniques of fiction writing.

A useful handbook for writers, "The Writing of Fiction" also provides a sensitive guide to the understanding of fiction for the general reader.

Witty, perceptive and original in its approach, it explains and clarifies the how and the why of fiction.

Few are better qualified to write a book on this subject than Professor `Teddy` Goodman, who for thirty years taught creative writing at the City College, New York.

He numbers among the successful alumni of his courses such well-known writers as Alfred Kazin, Gilbert Millstein, William Gibson and Paddy Chayefsky.

The Writing of Fiction
This important book, which was greatly admired by Sigmund Freud and Havelock Ellis when it was originally published in 1919 and revised several times, was one of the first successful attempts to apply psychoanalytic concepts to literature.

It heralded the advent of a significant new school of criticism: one which sought to uncover the unconscious motivations of writers and the way these often showed surprising divergences from consciously stated artistic goals.

The Erotic Motive in Literature
Olive Schreiner (1855-1920) rose to international fame as the first major white South African writer of fiction, as an eloquent advocate of feminism, socialism, pacifism and free thought, as a trenchant critic of British imperialism and racism.

Perhaps best known for her novel "The Story of an African Farm", Schreiner wrote political and social treatises as well as allegories and short stories.

Her most influential feminist work "Woman and Labour" was touted as the Bible of the early twentieth-century women`s movement, a rare honour for its time.

This well-crafted interdisciplinary study examines Schreiner`s lifelong struggle to heal the maladies afflicting the Victorian social anatomy and its moral and intellectual dimensions.

Using both known and hitherto unmined sources, Joyce Avrech Berkman probes the connection between Schreiner`s thought and her primary personal experiences, all within the context of the social and political climate of her day.

The Healing Imagination of Olive Schreiner
Sylvia Beach, owner of the famous Paris bookshop "Shakespeare and Company" was one of the most important figures in James Joyce`s literary career.

She published Joyce`s Ulysses, she sustained him, she protected him and she gave far more than she ever received.

Joyce`s letters to Beach, which span a period of nearly twenty years, present the first complete record of their remarkable relationship.

This correspondence comprises postcards, telegrams, verses and over 200 letters of which only thirteen have ever been published.

These letters provide an inside glimpse into the endless activities related to James Joyce`s literary output from 1921 into the 1930s.

Melissa Banta has been Assistant Curator of The Poetry/Rare Book Collection and for a number of years an assistant to the Director of the University Libraries, State University of New York at Buffalo.

The late Oscar A. Silverman was chairman of the English Department of University of Buffalo and Director of Libraries of State University of New York at Buffalo.

James Joyce`s Letters to Sylvia Beach (1921-1940)
The Left Bank of Paris was the window on the world in a time when one:

Could witness Ilya Ehrenburg giving voice to his ideologies

Arno Breker, the German sculptor, escorting Adolf Hitler on a tour of the city

When the careers of Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre bloomed and flourished

When Henry Miller found the threat of global war merely a nuisance that interfered with his life and work.

The author Herbert Lottmann, whose biography of Camus was hailed as `brilliant and absorbing`, captures both the human and the intellectual drama of this period in a detailed and engrossing chronicle that is a monument of spirited and graceful scholarship.
