Paul Tillich (1886-1965) was known for the whole of his life as a Christian theologian and philosopher and his main work is contained in his Systematic Theology, three volumes, 1951-1963.

"I think this thesis on `Paul Tillich and World Religions` is perhaps the finest on Tillich I have ever read and as a book it is superior to easily ninety per cent of the published material about Tillich" - Robert C. Kimball, Executor Literary Estate of Paul Tillich.

Paul Tillich and World Religions examines in some detail Tillich`s methods in approaching the complex questions of inter-religious encounter and dialogue.

The author offers an interpretation that takes into account all the evidence and reaches a conclusion that is at odds with most other interpretations of Tillich`s position at the end of his life.

The evidence points to weaknesses in Tillich`s methods but also to a radical shift in Tillich`s thinking brought about by the impact of a serious attempt to understand other religions, especially Hinduism and Buddhism.

"Thomas sees the deep continuity in Tillich`s thought including that of the last five years . . . . . It may be the right time to voice the hope for publication in the near future of Thomas`s impressive analysis of Tillich`s legacy to dialogues and encounters." - Krister Stendahl, Bishop in the Church of Sweden, Brandeis University and Professor at Harvard Divinity School.

Interaction between Christian and African Traditional Religions

The articles which comprise this book were delivered initially at a conference held at the University of Zimbabwe 21-24 June 1994 on the theme "The Interaction between Christian Religion and African Traditional Religions: Focus on Rites of Passage."

The conference constituted one of the regional conferences co-ordinated by the African Christianity Project of the Centre for the Study of Christianity in the Non-Western World, University of Edinburgh.

This book demonstrates that the academic study of religion is not only responsive to developments in religious life but is interested in actively exploring the symbolic structures expressed in Christian and Traditional ritual activities.

Academic `understanding` thus is shown to be interactive with the many factors which comprise meaning within human societies and religious communities.

The articles comprising the book are written by a number of contributors in three parts, and divided into thirteen chapters.

This book appears in the series "Religion in Contemporary Africa" edited by James L. Cox and Gerrie ter Haar.

Much of the literature in the field of Islamic Studies concentrates on the contemporary ideological reform movements.

Sufism is usually perceived as an historical phenomenon and the literature focuses on the teachings of long-dead masters.

The vibrant living tradition is often neglected in studies, there is a strong case to argue that the dominant mode of Muslim belief and practice is still highly influenced by the Sufi tradition.

Sufi orders (tariqas) are still flourishing in most parts of the Muslim world and rural Muslims, if not actually practising Sufis, often focus their religious life around veneration to deceased saints from the various Sufi orders.

This book will attempt to restore the balance by demonstrating the prevalence of the Sufi tradition in Britain.

The migration process brought Muslims to Britain from all over the world and most of the major tariqas are present in this country and are flourishing. The book deals with:

The beliefs and practices of contemporary Sufis

The history and development of the Sufi tariqas in Britain

Case studies of several major tariqas from the Subcontinent, Middle-East, Africa and Turkey

Electic forms of Sufism practised by the indigenous population and forming part of the `New Age` phenomenon
.

An Educational, Pastoral and Spiritual Approach To HIV/AIDS

This book was written for the Christian community particularly in developing countries.

It arose from an invitation by the Heads of the main Churches in Lesotho, representing the Lesotho Council of Churches, to run workshop/training courses for clergy and religious to help lessen the impact of HIV/AIDS in Lesotho.

The Church is a highly valued, though an under-used resource, that could more effectively prevent the transmission of HIV and encourage and develop domiciliary care.

HIV/Aids is preventable and Christians have no option but to be in the forefront of those committed to care and education. Churches have played a crucial part but much more remains to be done.

Historically, the Church has always been in the forefront of compassionate care of the weak, sick and poor. It has a mandate to console, to reconcile, to love and to minister in unconditional acceptance.

HIV/AIDS is an epidemic disease with a profound social effect - in countries both rich and poor it is a strain on health budgets and in poorer countries such as Africa it increasingly affects the economically active population who produce food, shelter and care for the young and old.

The objective of this book is to give clergy and religious groups a basic knowledge of HIV/AIDS, and an understanding of the needs of people with this virus.

It aims to assist them in the pastoral care of victims, their loved ones and their carers, both professional and lay. This includes an understanding of what HIV/AIDS is, the modes of transmission, a basic understanding of testing, pre and post test counselling and the effect on the family and the wider community.

A concerted attempt has been made to address the issue of HIV and AIDS within a theological and spiritual context: looking at what is ideal, the reality and what is unacceptable. This needs to fit into existing knowledge, culture and social fabric of responsibilities utilising existing skills.

Practical Theology in a World Context

This collection of articles draws on the work of Practical Theologians from around the world as they reflect theologically on the tension of living in a world increasingly unified by technology, mobility and mass-culture, but which also recognises regional and cultural diversity, economic and political conflict and a sense of diffuseness and relativism-difference.

This book will be of interest to:

Practitioners in Practical Theology and colleagues in other theological disciplines

Course leaders in Practical Theology for whom it could prove a teaching resource

Sstudents in Departments of Theology and seminaries preparing for ministry, lay or ordained, in a pluralistic society

Church leaders and others with responsibility for guiding pastoral action and mission in today`s world

Pastors and others looking for ways of keeping in touch with the rapid developments in the discipline

Paul Ballard is Head of Department and senior Lecturer in Practical Theology in the Department of Religious and Theological Studies, Cardiff University, Wales.

He has edited and written a number of books, including "The Foundations of Pastoral Studies and Practical Theology (editor: Cardiff 1986)", "In and Out of Work: A Pastoral Perspective (Edinburgh 1987)" and "Practical Theology in Action (with John Pritchard: London 1996)".

Pamela Couture is Associate Professor of Pastoral Theology at Colgate Rochester Divinity School in Rochester, New York and has a Ph.D in Practical Theology from the University of Chicago and an M.Div. from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary.

She has written "Blessed are the Poor? Globalisation and Difference
The Social and Pastoral Care Unit at the University of Cardiff Department of Religious and Theological Studies, and its predecessor the Social Work Resource Centre, has been working in the area of sexuality and spirituality for a some time in a wide variety of ways and in collaboration with a number of different bodies: notably the Church in Wales, and Cytun, the Council of Churches for Wales, in the fields of ministry and conscientization in relation to H.I.V. and AIDS, sexual abuse and sexuality and spirituality.

From 1989 to 1992 the Church in Wales had a working group reflecting upon human sexuality under the chairmanship of Canon Leonard Deas.

Many of these papers were originally published as part of their report in ADVENT the Journal of the Division for Social Responsibility in the Church of Wales.

Out of these and other pieces of work a common theme appeared: the relationship between sexuality and spirituality - it is this theme that is the focus of this book.

So a number of papers have been reassembled without regard to their original relationships and supplemented from other sources or added to for the occasion.

These have been edited around the new focus yet with the intention of letting them speak for themselves, allowing different voices and their viewpoints to be heard.

The various authors come from different church backgrounds, Anglican, Baptist, Catholic, Methodist and the United Reformed Church, reflecting the ecumenical nature of the book and of Social and Pastoral Care Unit.

Sexuality and Spirituality
This book is a collection of essays, originally given at the meeting of the International Academy for Practical Theology in Quebec.

They touch on the visual arts, music, drama and poetry as they have expressed pastoral concerns, informed worship and reveal contemporary culture, together with academic discussions of aesthetics in relations to theology.

Creativity, Imagination and Criticism
Divinities and Ancestors in Encounter with Christianity in the Religious Experience and History of the Early Irish and the Akan People of Ghana

The primary focus is on the sacral nature of kingship/rulership equally central for understanding both cultures and the encounter of each with Christianity.

The sources of early Ireland included a variety of medieval Irish written texts, especially those featuring the pan-celtic divinity Lugh or Lugus in his Irish guise as paradigmatic king, together with the relevant archaeological evidence, locally surviving custom and folk-lore etc.

The most striking of the mutually illuminating similarities in this comparative study across the huge separation in historical context are the presence of female power as a basic essential in `Sacral Rule`, (which must not be confused with `monarchy` in either culture) and the role and cosmic significance of the `Great Living Tree` growing at the ritual `centre` of each kin-based territorial community.

The Sacred Tree
Ever since Darwin, people have been trying to use evolution to pin down human nature and explain morality.

But what bearing does the theory that humans evolved really have on how we should understand altruism, justice, friendship and guilt?

Since the 1970s, a consensus has emerged that natural selection, acting at the level of the genes, not only created morality but right from the start corrupted it.

This new consensus embraces psychology, game theory and the study of animal behaviour to portray human nature as inherently selfish and human morality as fundamentally self-serving.

It is a persuasive attempt to give a robust, scientific account of why moral perspectives exist, it is also fatally flawed.

Can Darwinism Explain Morality?
International Practical Theological Perspectives

The global problem of poverty is among the most serious problems facing humanity in the twenty-first century.

The increasing discrepancy between rich and poor in general and specifically nations of the Northern hemisphere and poor nations of the Southern hemisphere breeds a huge host of related tragedies.

Poverty, Suffering and HIV AIDS
Increasingly pastoral caregivers are attending to the voices of the marginalised and silenced.

This book captures those voices and the concerns of those people from all the continents of the world and how they impact upon the ministries of pastoral care and counselling.

Authors from Africa, Asia, Europe and North and South America explore pastoral care from the point of view of their different cultures and spiritualities always bearing in mind the enormous social, political and economic inequalities present in every society.

Emmanuel Lartey is President of the International Council for Pastoral Care and Counselling and Professor of Pastoral Theology and Care at Columbia Theological Seminary USA.

John Foskett is President of the British Association for Pastoral and Spiritual Care and Counselling and a Fellow of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.
